Todd why do you keep saying Monahan needs a change of scenery? Its Gaudreau that does. I posted this on the last thread but will repost here>
Monahan scored 22 goals in this shortened season, then he scored in the following order going backward 34, 31,27,27,31 & 22 in his rookie season. Averaged almost 75 games per year so he's durable.
Now lets take Barkov, drafted same year & everyone calls a #1 centre.
He had 20 goals in the shortened season here & then 35,27,21,28,16 & 8 in his rookie year. He averaged under 65 games per year. So he is more injury prone.
Monahan doesnt need to go. If I were Treliving, it would take a lot to pry a 25 year established top6 centre with this production that is cap friendly for the next 3 years.
Treliving should just keep Monahan, build a 2nd line around him, move Lindholm to centre Tkachuk & Magpie. Get a solid RW as part of the return for Gaudreau.
Then I trade Backlund to a team looking for a 2nd line centre like Buffalo. Perhaps Backlund & the #19 for the #8 & a prospect like Middlestat who struggled last year.
We need Monahans goals.
As for goalie, Im sorry, Fleury has looked pretty good in any playoff games he's played here it's just Lehner has looked amazing. I would offer Riitch & maybe our 2021 3rd to Vegas for Fleury & their late 1st . Vegas save 4.25 mill of cap & get a solid backup with 1 year left on contract. We use Z or Parsons or even Gillies to back up Fleury. The two years left for Fleury bridges the time we need to get Wolf ready. Flames have tons of options in net out there. |

You put a lot of effort/ work into this post. I agree keep Monahan, you just don’t replace goal scoring. People so disappointed in playoffs they’re willing to throw away assets. Perhaps if he’d played for Barrie Todd wouldn’t feel this way.
Imo, I still think getting a goalie is the #1 thing for them to do. We can’t keep recycling mediocrity in the crease. |

I would agree about the goalie & going all in if we didnt have Wolf. My spider senses are saying this kid is the real deal. Yeah I know, we were saying the same about Parsons, who we shouldnt really be writing off just yet. I dont think Talbot will be that expensive, a 3-4 year dea 4.0mill per tops & I would have no problem going in with that tandem next year. Heck, if Rangers were willing to give us one of their later 1st's & take Rittch & maybe our 2021 2nd, I would consider running with Lundqvist. |

Todd, I saw that you launched a Devils site but still managing to write consistently for the Flames.
Much appreciated
As for the article... Hard pass on MAF (always disliked him) and Lundqvist (too old - need a 2-3 year stop gap).
My top picks are Lehner (v. likely Vegas re-signs), Kuemper (likely cost draft picks with Arizona's situation) then Markstrom (also likely re-signed at a discount to stay).
Top need for me is good coach (above all else), then a 1C/1RW, and finally depth defence. |

Agreed not sure why everyone quit on him. He came out saying he suffered with some serious mental health issues and played well since then while working with a trainer and consulting with a team therapist.
He's literally the same trajectory as Lehner - I think next year will be huge for Parsons with Gillies unlikely returning. He'll get the majority of starts. |

A big Hell Naw to MAF. That ship sailed when he went to Vegas. If we are indeed looking for a starter to play for 5 years, then we better look at someone less than 30.
Murray may be a good choice, but JR wants too much. Keumper is a tad old and was never a real starter. Demko may be a good option as a 1b, assuming we have a 1a to play with. The cost may not be too high. Maybe it just makes sense to try for one of the UFA guys (not Holtby). |

How do you try and use that argument to say that Gaudreau needs to go? Compare Gaudreau's first six seasons to Patrick Kane's. Gaudreau has more goals, assists, points, game winning goals, and most importantly, probably the most important stat of all, fewer power play goals. Granted, Kane had a lockout-shortened season, but that was somewhat balanced out by the COVID. Their goals, assists, and points per game are basically identical. Even Gaudreau's down season this year was better than Kane's down season in 11-12. How would the Hawks feel if they had decided to move on from Kane then?
Gaudreau is also durable. The only real time he missed was the broken finger.
He doesn't have the playoff success yet, but playoff success is far more team reliant. No one's been saying the Benn's been a bust these playoffs, and he got off to the exact same start Gaudreau did. If the Flames had gotten anything at all out of Tkachuk, they'd probably still be playing.
Since Gaudreau's entered the league he's 10th overall in points and 5th overall in the all-important even-strength points. Why are people trying to run him out of town again? |

@KevinR
Monahan is just as much an issue as Gaudreau, he only scored 80% of his goals because of Gaudreau. You have to look at the bigger picture yeah he had 22 goals this year and was a -16, so he allowed 16 more points against than he put up. That means most of his points probably came on the power play, and he was a liability 5 on 5. Backlund is the better #2 center our goals against would greatly suffer if we were to trade him. Towards the end of the year he was our best point producer as well. Goal scoring isn't everything, Monahan has to be the softest 6 3 200 pound hockey player I have ever seen.
Never get attached to players on your team, if trading someone is going to help the team I say do it. It's not going to help to trade a play driving defensive specialist, over a goal scoring defensive liability...
As far as MAF goes no thanks there only 17 mill cap available to sign 3 forwards 2 defensemen and a goalie. 7 mill thrown at him doesn't leave much to bring in a couple of good right handed defensemen and resign Mangiapane who deserves a decent raise at this point around 3.5 to 4 mill I'd think. And that doesn't include a couple extra bodies for injuries. Treliving's got to do something significant this year, if your promoting Lindy to #1 center than Monahan is going to get you the best return or wind up out of place on this team... along with Gaudreau use one to get a stud defensemen the other to get a top six forward, plus some prospects and picks... or maybe a stop gap good goalie. That doesn't cost an arm and a leg. If we improve the D and Forward group, maybe Talbot is that goalie.. |

Look at McDavid's +/-. Even scoring like a tire fire, he was -6. He is defensively 10x worse than Monahan. You want to rebuild? Fine, but giving up either player doesn't make much sense. One could get you the magic bean for a true #1C. Then you still need another high scoring winger.
Personally, I think Gio and Backlund are two bigger issues the team has to deal with. While neither is playing badly, they are the aging part of the core that needs to be replaced. $12m between the two and neither helped win this year nor last year.

What if Henrik would allow a trade to Calgary, and if Stevie Y became the middle man in the acquisition. NY trades King Henrik to Detroit w/ the Canes 1st and $3M retained for the Caps 2nd. Stevie turns around and trades Henrik to Calgary w/$2.5 retained for say Sam Bennett and a 6th. The King would cost only $3M for 1 yr |

So you want to trade one of our top 6 forwards for someone else’s top 6 forward? Makes sense.
